1. The Formation of Giant Crystals

The massive selenite crystals in the Cave of Crystals formed over hundreds of thousands of years. The cave lies above an underground magma chamber, which heated the water and saturated it with minerals like calcium sulfate. The stable temperature, consistently around 136°F (58°C), allowed the crystals to grow to extraordinary sizes without disturbance​.

These ideal conditions lasted for nearly 500,000 years, giving the crystals enough time to grow to sizes never before seen in other caves. The water inside the cave, once drained by mining operations, is now reflooding the cavern, protecting the crystals from exposure to air, which could cause them to deteriorate​.
