A Historical Gem Discovery: Mt. Mica’s Beginnings

The story of Mt Mica began in 1820, when two local naturalists, Elijah Hamlin and Ezekiel Holmes, made a groundbreaking discovery of vibrant green crystals while exploring the hills of Oxford County. These crystals were later identified as tourmaline, marking the first discovery of gem-quality tourmaline in the United States. This discovery was the catalyst for Maine’s emergence as a major player in the global gemstone industry.

Throughout the 19th century, mining operations at Mt Mica Maine yielded remarkable finds, including rare multicolored tourmaline crystals. The mountain quickly gained fame as one of the most prolific sources of this beautiful gemstone, particularly among collectors and jewelers.

The Resurgence: Modern Mining at Mt Mica Maine

By the mid-20th century, it seemed that Mt Mica’s potential had been exhausted, but a resurgence in gem mining occurred in 2003. Coromoto Minerals, under the direction of Gary and Mary Freeman, began systematic mining operations at Mt Mica Maine, exploring deeper into the pegmatite veins that had been overlooked.

Their efforts paid off, uncovering hundreds of new gem pockets filled with high-quality tourmaline. From deep greens to bright pinks and vivid blue crystals, these newly unearthed tourmalines are some of the finest ever produced by the mine. This revival confirmed that Mt Mica’s potential was far from exhausted, and the mine continues to yield gem-quality tourmaline to this day.
